After taking A LOT of
shit for releasing the highly controversial (by drum&bass’ terms) Moombahton
vs. DnB remix compilations
LIGHTER, the infamous remixer/producer comes out
undeterred, and swinging punches with a bunch of hot, original tracks on
Think2wice recordings. Showing that he’s
not just a one trick pony that only flexes the edits, Jon Kwest makes it rain
with a nice spectrum of tropical bass goodness.
THE LAST DON EP makes claim to releasing nothing but big tunes with the
lead track “The Last Don” staying true to Dutch House influences and
CULO-shaking persuasion.
“Whaddat” show’s Kwest’s
for drum & bass, and I can appreciate that he once was a Junglist with a
craving for terror bass and plunky samples – this one hits hard. The tune “Scratch Riddim” is easily my
favorite of the bunch adding some quirky filtering techniques on the lead
keeping that shit funky and skanky all at the same time, it’s a lazerdaggering
experience. Winding it right the fuck
down with “Stabbin Cabbin” with a smooth jam that’s deep and pulsating, I would
add some sort of sexual reference here, but if you’re dirty like me you’ll get
there on your own. Unfortunately I could
have cared less for the last track on the EP “The Whistle” which is actually
free to download - there’s something
about Electro and Moombahton that sounds like a garborator on some serious
chemicals having a bad trip, so I won’t comment on that one. But hey that one track is at least free, so
knock yourself out.
To end on a positive note,
this release comes with a nice selection of remixes by Moombaheads Jay-Fay,
Tactic, Guapo Feo, and Gulls all respectfully adding something to the
release. Choice remix by Tactic on “The
Last Don” for an up-tempo tropical house rework that should go overwell with
the house-heads.
The Last Don EP is available TODAY, Jan 17th, 2012 on
iTunes,
Juno Download,
Amazon and all fine digital retailers.
