I've known Angst from his ragga jungle days. His roots go deep with the rolling snares, reggae chatta and murderous bass. American born, he once resided here in Vancouver for many years and ignited the ragga jungle scene with his night The Relick and showcased talent from the 604 and beyond. The two years did feel brief, then Angst packed his bags and headed back to big brother, US, leaving behind a legacy of some of the best jungle parties in Vancouver of that time. He now resides in San Fransisco where he know feels inspired by the glitch-hop movement, where this sound is undoubtedly on fire. It's been a while since he had put out a mix so when I asked him what inspired this new mash-up of glitched out mayhem and laid back dub tracks.
"I haven't made a mix in a very long time. My inspiration for the mix came from the West Coast glitch hop scene, my love for reggae, dancehall and bass music. I had been listening to glitch hop for a minute, but it was Kraddy's Illegal Album that really won me over and influenced me to combine glitch with elements of reggae and dancehall. I was drawn to the synth lines and big room sounds of glitch hop, as well as the bassline pressure that the glitch producers are creating. A lot of glitch is really tweaky and lacks soul. I feel that Reggae and Dub adds a vibe to the music that's missing from a lot of glitch. Plus, I love reggae music and enjoy mixing it with other genres."
And it's just that, the sinister, edgy metallic sounds of glitch get a dubwise rubdown for a journey into sound that keeps your head snapping. Download the mix from the sound cloud player. For track listing follow the link to Angst's page below.
