After being asked to take the original post down, I waited a couple days and am back with some new words. Clearly it took some serious COJONES to remix (as you can tell by this track list) what are probably the BIGGEST Drum&Bass tunes of ALL ETERNITY. Like how are you going to remix Doc Scott's "Shadow Boxing" (31 Recs, 1996) and not piss anybody off? Don't look at me, I ain't mad, but the very first head to respond and wave the red flag was kind of unlikely: D&B ambassador Doc Scott, and he wasn't exactly throwing out high-fives. This immediately started a public shit-storm, when DC publicly announces that these bootleg/remixes where ill presented because the original artists where not approached about the project. Considering that the tunes weren't for sale and were intended to be given out for free, the argument was, hey they're just bootlegs... It's all good... um, RIGHT?
The shit-storm eventually turned into a level 3 shitacane as it spread from twitter over to the original post on Tropical Bass where the compilation first broke (here). Hospital Records label boss London Electricity, even weighed in the comments section with some nasty words. Likewise, the news also hit DogsOnAcid.com (Doc Scott threatens to take legal action), a drum&bass forum of over 100,000 registered users all getting a huge WHIFF of what was going down. However, the reviews were surprisingly mixed, heads taking the opportunity to hate as well as to rationalise the move made by Kwest.
Honestly at the end of the day, these remixes by Jon Kwest and everyone involved is just party music and was done with good intentions. Sampling and remixing is an integral part of Electronic Dance Music, and everything is borrowed. The Amen break, 'nuff said! Times have changed since the peak of Drum&Bass and in a digital world of music anything and everything is to be expected. And it shouldn't come to anyone's surprise if a few dudes want to pay homage to music that inspires them. And to each their own, I might be wrong but what's the big deal? Visit Tropical Bass to download this compilation and feel free to scan the comments section there. Peace.
